Beosound A9 ‘Catalyst’ — A Collaboration with Bang & Olufsen
Introducing the Beosound A9 ‘CATALYST’ — a collaboration between Haydenshapes and Bang & Olufsen, blending our material innovation with their iconic sound design.
Combining acute design sensibilities with engineering precision, BEOSOUND A9 ‘CATALYST’ is a limited edition collaboration that explores the parallels between light and sound through material and form.
Much like sunlight meeting the ocean, resin absorbs and refracts light to reveal shifting hues throughout the day. This reaction — sensitive to shape and volume — echoes the way sound waves move and intensify through a speaker.
The name ‘Catalyst’ refers to the key additive in the resin casting process — the element that generates heat, triggers transformation, and gives the material its final form. In the same way, a shared obsession with shape, material, and performance became the catalyst that brought Haydenshapes and Bang & Olufsen together to reimagine an iconic design.
Key to this limited release is an interchangeable printed speaker cover and a set of custom-developed legs crafted from translucent resin. Cast and shaped by hand using Hayden Cox’s own material formula and process, the legs taper to reveal internal resin textures formed during catalysis. As they catch the light, an iridescent blue gradient emerges — a visual cue that inspired the speaker cover design itself.
"The Beosound A9 for me is a true representation of functional art — it’s such an iconic design," says Hayden. "To apply a technical material like resin in a unique, limited edition release really speaks to how I’ve always approached surfboards: through innovation, performance, and storytelling. Material has always been the most critical part of everything I create." Hayden Cox
