#DESIGN | Our Psychedelic Germ model was actually inspired by the shape and performance of a snowboard. Curiously enough, this model has also been really popular with a number of Olympic snowboarders / HS customers from all around the world - perhaps without them even realising as to why. The 'side cuts', a key snowboard feature, was added to the Germ model by Hayden to help allow the board to turn on a tighter radius.
When side cuts are placed in the outline of a surfboard, you affect the rail line curvature. This can been visualised as a three dimensional curve combined of outline and rocker (rail line rocker). By using the concave outline of the side cut, it adds a lot more curve to board, which means the board will want to turn in a tighter radius. The interesting part about this is that you only feel the side cut when you are surfing fully on your rail ie. doing a bottom turn or top turn, and when you are surfing more laterally along the wave you don't feel this curve. This means you can keep your rocker lines a little straighter allowing the board to surf fast down the line, but when it comes to the pocket, you are on your rail and riding the side cut and turning on a dime. The feeling of engaging the side cut on a wave is very similar to carving on a snowboard, turning on the open face will remind you of a run on the mountain.

When Hayden was invited by Audi to Mt Hotham Resort recently to drive the all-new Q7 model on the ice he gladly accepted. Design ideas can come from everywhere and being surrounded by one of the most innovative performance brands in the world and seeing how they do things is a real eye opener. This model pushes boundaries. From the materials and customisation to the overall experience. It got us thinking about versatility and how to translate a performance concept across different conditions - be it on the road, the ice or in the water.
